From NC to Ohio

Posted by on June 15, 2012

We have postponed our trip north after learning that Brad’s paternal grandmother passed away earlier this week after a battle with Alzheimer’s. When we heard the news on Wednesday, we tried desperately to find some way to get back to Ohio for the funeral arrangements, a difficult proposition in this remote portion of North Carolina.

Wednesday afternoon we pulled in for fuel at Dowry Creek Marina simply because it was close to the ICW.  Without cell coverage or internet, our minds were solely focused on getting to Norfolk by Thursday night where we knew we could rent a car. While Brad fueled the boat and chatted with the dockmaster, I used the marina’s wifi to research our options, (and there weren’t many.) Luckily, the fantastic folks at Dowry Creek are very helpful and answered all of our questions. Shortly thereafter, Joint Venture was safely in a slip, her crew was showered and had clean laundry, a rental car pickup was set for the morning, and we headed up to a potluck dinner with the marina crew and other transient boaters.

Thursday we picked up the rental car and drove to Ohio, arriving late last night. We are very thankful that we stumbled upon Dowry Creek under these circumstances. We were able to get some much needed rest, and we won’t have to worry about Joint Venture while we are gone. Before we received the news, Brad was starting to question why we were pushing ourselves so hard to get north. Now that we’ve arrived here, we’re thankful that we did.
