Headed “Home”

We returned to my hometown under sad circumstances, but at the funeral on Friday evening we got the chance to mourn and celebrate my grandmother’s life with my extended family. The rest of the weekend we spent with my family, and we had a few days to play with my niece and nephew. Additionally, I had the chance to see my father on Father’s Day, something that wouldn’t have otherwise happened.

In a little bit we’ll get back on the road to head to Belhaven, NC where JV is docked. It’s about an 11 hour drive, so we won’t be on the road too late. I’m anxious to get back because I have an important repair waiting on me. On the way into the slip last Wednesday the throttle cable broke, and I had no way to slow the boat. Luckily I was approaching slowly and we had a few lines already on the pilings that I used to dock the boat. Later that night at the pot-luck another boater complemented me on our docking that day. I laughed and said, ‘Maybe I do better without the engine!’ Needless to say, he was very surprised that I had completed the docking maneuver without the throttle cable.

The new throttle cable should be shipped to the West Marine in Washington, NC today. I hope it arrives before we have to return the rental car tomorrow. After that it will be a race to get it installed, and get back out into the ICW. We’re trying to get to Bohemia Bay in the next couple of days so we can see our friends and take care of a few things before we continue north for the summer.

From NC to Ohio

We have postponed our trip north after learning that Brad’s paternal grandmother passed away earlier this week after a battle with Alzheimer’s. When we heard the news on Wednesday, we tried desperately to find some way to get back to Ohio for the funeral arrangements, a difficult proposition in this remote portion of North Carolina.

Wednesday afternoon we pulled in for fuel at Dowry Creek Marina simply because it was close to the ICW.  Without cell coverage or internet, our minds were solely focused on getting to Norfolk by Thursday night where we knew we could rent a car. While Brad fueled the boat and chatted with the dockmaster, I used the marina’s wifi to research our options, (and there weren’t many.) Luckily, the fantastic folks at Dowry Creek are very helpful and answered all of our questions. Shortly thereafter, Joint Venture was safely in a slip, her crew was showered and had clean laundry, a rental car pickup was set for the morning, and we headed up to a potluck dinner with the marina crew and other transient boaters.

Thursday we picked up the rental car and drove to Ohio, arriving late last night. We are very thankful that we stumbled upon Dowry Creek under these circumstances. We were able to get some much needed rest, and we won’t have to worry about Joint Venture while we are gone. Before we received the news, Brad was starting to question why we were pushing ourselves so hard to get north. Now that we’ve arrived here, we’re thankful that we did.
