Late last night the northern reaches of Sandy passed over us here in “The
Basin.” We saw gusts to 45 knots and pounding rain, but she passed us here
without incident. As we laid in bed, listening to the wind howl in the
rigging and the mast vibrate in the wind, we were very happy for all the
time we took to prepare the boat.
This morning we’re watching the Today Show, seeing the devastation in New
York and New Jersey. The gusts here are decreasing, we’re seeing 25-30
today, but the gusts and rain look like they’ll continue till Thursday.
The weather forecast has the remnants of Sandy clearing out on Thursday, and
we might leave The Basin that day. Until then we’re working inside the boat
to prepare for our cruise back to the Bahamas this winter. We’ll also need
the wind gusts to decrease so we can put the genoa, canvas, and solar panels
back on before we leave.
Checking my calendar, I see that Thursday is November 1st, (and we’re still
in Maine.) While we didn’t plan on being in Maine in November, the
alternative would have had us in Long Island Sound, bearing the full brunt
of the hurricane. Therefore, we’re very happy to be delayed, even if it’s
going to get much colder after this weekend.
We hope that everyone stayed safe during the storm, and continues to stay
safe in the aftermath. Drop us a line via email to let us know how you’re
doing.
Thanks for the update! Like many others following your travles, was worried about the affect of Sandy on your boat! So glad to hear that you guys are okay!
Thanks for following along! Did you get any snow from the storm?
Glad to hear you’re safe. Unfortunately the Captain of the Bounty should have played it safer.
We had a spirited trip to Portland even today, I can’t imagine what it was like for the Bounty in the middle of the storm.
