And so it begins….

Posted by on January 11, 2012

I was a little dismayed that we hadn’t harvested any of the excellent seafood here in the Bahamas.
No lobster. No conch. No fish.

Luckily that all changed today:

wa-HOO!!!!!

Did it bite on a dark lure?
OR did it accidentally swim into the keel and come floating belly up behind the boat.

I waited around till the sportfishers were offloading their catches and I stole it off the docks. (Just kidding) See the reply to Larry about the lure. I found a tackle shop here in Marsh Harbour and bought dark colors and some pre-rigged ballyhoo before we headed out for the day.

Awesome! What did you catch him on? Btw, you should be able to catch your own ballyhoo w a cast net.

It was a pre-rigged ballyhoo on wire with a stinger hook. Had a 1 ounce egg sinker with a long purple and silver squid skirt over the nose. Thought about catching my own ballyhoo, but cast nets are EXPENSIVE. Might pick one up when we get back to the states.

Wow! What is it? Sorry, I don’t know anything but catfish & sunnies that the kids catch in the marina! Brooke saw the picture and said “I didn’t know fish came that big!

It’s a wahoo, and they’re delicious, I’ll put some info up in the next post.

Nice fish ! I am enjoying your posts and following the story closely. Still can’t talk my wife into doing this. I am curious, are you filling your scuba tanks on land or are you using your own compressor?
A tail snare makes lobstering easy. You probably have the materials to make one on your boat.
    Good luck

We haven’t used our tanks yet, but we’ll just refill at a shop, we don’t have a compressor. In the Bahamas you can’t lobster or fish with SCUBA so we haven’t taken our tanks along yet in the hopes that we can get dinner first. I was thinking about a snare but the guy at the dive shop said, “Why wouldn’t you just spear them?” Easier said than done.
